King Waldemar IV of Denmark, also known as
Waldemar Atterdag, occupied and ransacked Visby after a
bloody fight in which lots of soldiers died.
Fornsalen, the museum in Strandgatan shows scenes and remains of
the fight. In Kapitelhusgården there is a small exhibition about the
fight in 1361. During Medeltidsveckan at the end of the reenactment of Waldemars invasion a
young maiden (Jungfrun) is sent to a tower for helping King Waldemar enter the town. Over 100 years ago a writer made up that story
and nowadays it almost seems to be a historic event.
Too bad there isn't more eye for authenticity in
details with the participants in the official program (i.e.: modern
spectacles and modern shoes). But it is surely impressive with the wonderful clothes.
